Hook Worms 2
| HOOKWORM (ANCYLOSTOMA BRAZILIENSE) This hookworm is found in tropical and southern temperate regions and affects cats and dogs. It especially is prevalent in Florida and Louisiana. Common symptoms are various skin problems, pneumonia and enteritis. Unlike A. Caninum, A. Braziliense infections are not life-threatening, and in humans there is little public health concern and few symptoms other than plumber's itch (named because of its incidence in utility workers) that occurs as the cutaneous larval migrans transit the skin and cause intense itching on their way to the small intestine. Treatment options are fenbendazole, milbemycin, or pyrantel. As with other hookworm species, avoid infection by frequently changing dog bedding and keeping dogs off feces-contaminated grounds. Keep kennel floors dry and avoid feeding animals outside on dirt. Submitted by Joy - excerpts from Dog World Magazine |
